List as many top reasons for a family to keep internet access?
June 19, 2009
My neighbor says she wants to discontinue her internet access and might sell the computer. They are a family of four and the kids are 15 and 11. Her main justification is that she doesnt want the children exposed to inappropriate/obscene information.
I don’t want to address her fear here. I’d like to compile a list of the top practical uses for the computer w internet access for a family and home owner, so that she can realize how necessary and useful it is! For example, how she can maybe …save money indirectly, must-have website info,…
(anything you think would make her reconsider. she describes herself as practical, no frills, economical, conservative)
Thanks!

Here’s the top reasons I’d list:
* Easier to do online banking. (many companies now prefer direct or Bpay deposits, which are a lot easier with Internet banking.)
* Reference material. Once children get to higher school levels, sometimes it is mandatory that they use sources from the internet.
* Practice. In computer education classes, teachers treat students as if each one has a home computer. This means children without a home computer and internet access are at a direct disadvantage to other children in this class.
* Buying. Often it is impossible to get items that one really needs. With safe easy to use online shopping like Ebay, people can get good quality items at reasonable costs, usually posted or delivered. This is good in a range of ways, as the following examples show – childrens dress up parties, specially hard to find movies or books, difficult to buy for people’s presents, university and school textbooks.
* Subscriptions. Many companies now offer cards that can be signed up for free online. One example is BCC Cinemas (this is in Australia) where people get cheap movies and can win prizes by signing up for the free card online. Another example is flybuys. Also, when you sign up for different cards or subscribe to magazines, they often request an email address, and send you bonus offers.
* Vouchers. Many sites offer vouchers that you can print off your computer and use at local shops (for example pizza or ice cream vouchers.)
Ok I can’t think of anymore right now. I hope that helps at little at least.

Internet is a must nowadays. Informative for her children. There is bad on the TV as well as the Internet. Parental guidance should be exercised. Kids need the Internet to do research for their school. You can even get free language translation off the net. I am currently learning Spanish for free from the Internet. The Internet helps the kids with their spelling. The kids need cheap entertainment like the chat on messenger. the kids can email their friends. The Internet is excellent for their mentality.

“Her main justification is that she doesnt want the children exposed to inappropriate/obscene information.”
She can have the internet and control/monitor what her kids do on the internet.
Forward her to this site:

i would rather have my kids home in front of the computer where i know they are safe, than out in the streets where i don’t know what they are doing, or who they are with.
