  No, If you have a wi-fi laptop, you can intercept wi-fi signals in highways. But you said that you have a GPS system with a receiver, So the receiver itself is your means of wireless connectivity direct to satellite calculating your locations and routes.

  No you don’t need internet access to use a Laptop GPS system. You just need to have a map program that will take the GPS information and put it on a screen for you. MS Trips and Streets, Delorme, etc. These are great little devices and get the information needed from the satelites. So all you need is the GPS receiver and the correct map software and your laptop will show you where you are, will give you directions on how to get where you want to go, etc.

  If you want LIVE traffic updates you will need another traffic receiver like XM etc but you don’t have to have internet.

  The GPS reciever gets signals fromthe sattelites and finds out your current latitude, longitude, speed and altitude. This information is passed onto the laptop. The laptop should have some software which has got inbuilt maps on which this latitude/longitude are marked.

  A good software for mapping which I use is the OziExplorer, which allows you to download your own maps and calibrate them and use it.

  As said in the previous answer, if you want any LIVe info like traffic etc, you need an internet connection to get the information from the server database.
