What do the images of frogs, leaves, etc. mean in “Fringe”?

When the TV show “Fringe” cuts to commercial, it first shows an image set against a black background with yellow lights. There’s been a frog, a leaf with an equilateral triangle in it, an apple with a fetus for seeds, etc.

I thought it was maybe linked to a sort of viral marketing campaign, but I can’t find what the actual inspirations are for these images.
